An Inter-association "All-Stars" competition in Netball was introduced in 2016 and was originally held between representative teams from School Sport WA - Government schools (SSWA) and the Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC). In 2020, IGSSA WA joined the competition to make it a tri-association challenge, and the competition now showcases the best talent in our Secondary Schools Students.
The ACC is a sporting association for Associated and Catholic schools, currently managing 89 member schools. SSWA represent students from all WA government schools and IGSSA is an independent girls’ schools’ association comprising of 8 member schools. All three organisations work on selecting their strongest side to represent their association. For a player to qualify is a very special achievement as they compete against players from other schools both in the metropolitan and regional areas for team selection.
Whilst IGSSA WA are a small association in comparison to our rivals, we are a force to be reckoned with. To nominate for an IGSSA All-Star team, a player must receive an invitation to nominate through their own school. To meet criteria for nomination, students must be in Years 10-12, have approval of the Director of Sport in their school, and actively represent and support their School in the IGSSA Sporting Program.
The 2022 Tri-Association Challenge will be held on Sunday the 16th of October at the Gold Netball Centre. IGSSA will have a tough draw of back to back matches in a bid to defend the title. All spectators are welcome to come and watch our top school students in action (free entry). The draw is as follows:
9.00am Match 1: SSWA v ACC
9.55am Match 2: ACC v IGSSA
10.50am Match 3: IGSSA v SSWA
IGSSA win the All-Star 2021 netball Title!
IGSSA played against the SSWA team in the first match. IGSSA got away to a flying start, with a lead of 10-5 after the first quarter. But the SSWA team came back strongly in the middle quarters to have the game tied at 15 all at half time, and 21 all at ¾ time. The game was in the balance in the final term, but IGSSA fought off a strong challenge and ended up winning the game by 1 goal (27-26) in a fabulous nail biting match.
The ACC team came out strong against the SSWA team in the first quarter to jump to a 10 – 7 lead. But like their previous game, the SSWA team dug deep in the second quarter to go ahead 15 – 13. The SSWA team held this 2 goal advantage to end the 3rd quarter 21 – 19 ahead, and were impressive in the final term, winning the game 4 goals ahead of the ACC team. (29-25)
The final game between IGSSA and the ACC was the decider. An IGSSA win/ draw would secure the title. A narrow ACC win would see SSWA win the title on percentage, and a win of more than 6 goals by the ACC team would see them retain the trophy.
The entire match was goal for goal, with IGSSA holding a margin of 1 goal at the end of the first quarter (9-8). The intensity continued to build and all scores continued to be tied at the end of the second (16-16) and third quarters (24-24). In the dying minute of the match, IGSSA went one goal up, and were able to retain possession to win the game 33-32 in another heart stopping performance!
The 2021 All stars event was an amazing display of quality netball by the top school netballers in all school associations. All teams were outstanding, and our IGSSA players bought a level of skill, professionalism and determination that could not be faltered. It was lovely to see them rise to the occasion and take home the cup, and for an 8 school association, this is truly remarkable!
