MLC Claim the 2026 IGSSA Athletics Championship

The 2026 Athletics Carnival was a perfect day for track and field. It was sunny but not hot, with a lovely cool breeze every now and then, and IGSSA athletes took every opportunity to make the most of it. Athletes from all eight schools came to WA Athletics Stadium on Tuesday 8 September, and they gave us a day of fast times, new records and great team spirit.

The scores were close all day, with three schools in the lead at some point, but consistent relay placings proved decisive. Only 29.5 points separated first and second at the end of the day, and just 63.5 points covered the top three.

MLC’s coaches and team have been working towards this success for a long time. After a close 2nd place at the 2025 IGSSA Athletics, it was within grasp, and they took full advantage. MLC had the highest track score of the day, won the 15 Year Olds age group, and set a new IGSSA record in the 16–17 Shot Put.

Perth College finished a strong second overall and won the field events with 489 points. They also won the 14 Year Olds age group and swept the Division 2 relays for Years 7, 8 and 9. The Perth College Old Girls finished the day in style, setting a new IGSSA record in the Old Girls 4x100m Relay.

St Mary’s took third place overall after a consistent day across every age group. They won the 13 Year Olds age group and were especially strong in the sprints and hurdles, including wins in the Year 10 hurdles in both divisions. The St Mary’s Old Girls also ran well, finishing second in the Old Girls relay.

Iona won more individual events than any other school. They won the 12 Year Olds age group and dominated the middle distance events. Iona won the 800m in Years 8, 9 and 11–12, and the senior 800m was won in record time. An Iona Year 8 athlete also broke the IGSSA 400m record, and Iona won the Year 8 Division 1 relay.

St Hilda’s owned the senior events and won the 16–17 age group by a big margin. Their seniors won the 100m, 200m and 400m, and a new IGSSA record came in the 400m. St Hilda’s also won both senior 4x100m relays. At the other end of the school, their Year 7s won the 800m and 1500m.

Santa Maria came within half a point of winning the 14 Year Olds age group. They won the Division 1 relays in both Year 9 and Year 10, as well as the Year 10 100m and the senior 1500m.

PLC had a highlight in the Year 8 80m hurdles, winning both divisions. Their 13 Year Olds finished an impressive sixth in their age group.

Penrhos had one of the stand-out young athletes of the day. Their Year 7 sprinter won the 100m and 200m and ran under the IGSSA 400m record, in a race where the first two athletes both finished inside the old mark. Penrhos also won the Year 7 Division 1 relay and both the 800m and 1500m in Year 10.
